To walk in purpose often takes an insurmountable level of courage and boldness. Latoya Cooper’s journey is a sheer manifestation of such audacity. While her path may be far from linear, each step along the way has helped guide her on her trajectory to becoming one of Dallas, Texas’s brightest rising stars in eclectic soul music and artist education.
Born and raised in Oklahoma City, Latoya received formal music training as the only singer, songwriter, and guitarist in her family. In the scarce music scene of her hometown, Latoya was often left to her own devices and forced to find an alternative route into the spotlight. She began participating in the local pageant circuit at the age of ten. This lead Latoya to many other notable opportunities, one of which included competing at Miss Oklahoma and winning top talent.
“As an artist, it’s hard to find who you are,” she admits - finding her own voice took time. Latoya’s vocal coach encouraged her to embark on her journey of discovering her identity in music and embracing it.
As pressure grew from outside sources to “play it safe in life”, Latoya stopped singing at 19 to enroll at the University of Oklahoma. After graduation, and relocating to Dallas, she eventually went on to earn three consecutive degrees, including her MBA. She had everything; a great corporate job, beautiful loft apartment, money and world travel, but was unhappy…
“I looked up and ten years had passed”.
Latoya struggled with depression in those years. But then, she found the power of song again as she reconnected to the Lord. She started to experience happiness and passion to help others use their musical gift for a greater good. During this time, Latoya served five years as an instructor for Ladder Alliance, a non-profit focused on teaching women victims of domestic violence and incarceration computer, resume and public speaking skills to help them re-enter the workforce successfully. This was one of Latoya’s proudest moments; the confidence rebuild through music gave Latoya what she needed to serve others with passion and commitment. It is safe to say this was the turning point where Latoya’s long hiatus from music officially ended.
“God told me to sing for people who want to be fed in a different way… I sing because I love to see people happy... I believe by realizing my own musical dreams, hopefully I will inspire my audiences to reach and fulfill God’s Vision for their own purpose-filled life.”
True to her divinely-ordained mission, she exudes pure love and compassion through her music with empowering lyrics, emboldened by Latin, jazz, pop, and neo-soul influences. Latoya has toured, performed for sold-out crowds, landed voice-over work and sang background vocals for other artists. She has gone on to release several solo projects, Eclectic Soul EP 2015, Free and Bold 2016 and her EP “Hear Me Roar” in 2017 to a warm reception followed by the Essence.com premiere of her hit single “Love Affair”.
“Music is powerful, [and it’s] important for me to create something that soothes the soul and empowers the spirit…. My music reflects my determination to live with true purpose and without regrets.”
When Latoya is not creating music she is helping other artists in their success. As the creator and founder of “MusicMeetsTheBoardroom.com”. Latoya is focused on helping Ambitious Artists find purpose, self-empowerment, and strategy to execute God’s vision for their gift. The organization offers workshops designed to empower the Indie Artist to build strong business and budget savvy practices.
In 2018, Latoya hosted “The Latoya Cooper” Show @Strictly DFW TV. The visual podcast with over 2,000 weekly viewers featuring Dallas-Fort Worth celebrities and touring artists who visited DFW from all over the world. The show grew in popularity each week as new viewers discover her direct approach to asking guests questions indie artists want to know. Subjects of the show focused around Music industry-related topics, in line with Music Meets The Boardroom’s mission. You can now catch Latoya’s artist interviews on her own Music Meets The Boardroom platform starting February 2019.
Latoya is passionate about creating a platform for ambitious artists to learn from each other and from creatives in the music industry who have walked the journey many are seeking. “It is hard being an artist, if I can create a platform for artists to glean from others successes, failures and hopefully give them a step up in their journey. Then I have done my job!”
Latoya admits, “there was an advantage to getting an MBA, it allowed me to understand the business aspect of my true passion: music. I am now about to help other creatives fall in love with business as well”.
